Opinion Poll: Sex, Responsibility & Self Expression

I'd like your opinion about the recent reactions to Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and sexual conduct in popular music, in film, photography or any art or expression in general. Do you believe such recent behavior is over the top and madly inappropriate or do you feel it's more about personal censorship and taking on responsibility for yourself and your own children? Some are of the opinion that parents have too long let media raise their children while others feel it is primarily the media's responsibility. What do you think?

If you choose to be anonymous, just tell us what City & State you're from.

Thanks

Wil

  1. I will put it simply: It is degrading. Cyrus is portraying herself as an ambiguously dumb slut. Applied sex or sexual expressions in media Art is a given, that much is granted. However, in general, I am extremely disgusted with Cyrus and the overly excessive use of sexual expression in music. Which is probably why I detach myself from today's pop music.

Yes, it is over the top and highly inappropriate.

    1. An interesting reply Cyndi. I would not discount her behavior as anything less than sexual and explicit but I hardly find it new or even unique. We have been seeing this for years from different artists and it has been tolerated and even encouraged. Beyonce isn't bending over on crouches but she gyrates, shakes and bounces sexually as much or more than anyone else. What I find most appalling is the general population seemingly ganging up on Miley Cyrus as if to make an example of her. I believe it stems from the fact that she was a child star and worshipped by millions of young girls as Hanna Montana. But everyone is forgetting the larger issue. Hanna Montana is NOT a real person. She is a made of character to play on and exploit the dreams of young girls everywhere for money. Miley Cyrus is a real person; albeit over the top and flagrant but all to continue selling products but to a different audience altogether. She is a woman despite what those people still hanging on to her as a child thinks.

Producers saw a potential to exploit the psychological pliability of all young girls and sought to make money while leveraging the popularity of her father's celebrity given rise to Hanna Montana. Millions of dollars were made and are still being made. Isn't this more about parents feeling duped and made a fool of. It's a vengeful lashing out by all these parenting groups. They don't truly care about Miley in particular. They just feel exploited and taken advantage of by what they now see as a wolf in sheep clothing an they feel she is an easy target.

I say everyone needs to get over it. It's nothing we haven't seen before. What we really should be discussing is the double standard of sexual conduct as it pertains to men and women. Bieber gets blow back but not like this.
